How a Peasant Saved the Country

Dong Xu
This is a true story that took place in China about 2,500 years ago (770–476 B.C.). At that time, China was divided into more than a hundred small states. These states fought frequent wars, and the powerful states constantly attacked the weaker ones. Cao Gui (pronounced “tzao gwee”) is the hero of this story. He lived in a state named Lu, which is now a part of the Shan Dong province. Cao Gui was an ordinary young man. With his knowledge and wisdom, Cao Gui helped the King to win the battle against their powerful enemy.
When armies in ancient China went to war, they stood in position and got ready to fight. Then, the side that wanted to attack first would beat their battle drums. Driven by the sound of the battle drums, the soldiers would charge bravely and fight their enemy. Weapons and the number of the fighters were often not what would win a battle. Instead, strategy, and the spirit of the soldiers played an important role. There have been many cases in Chinese history where a small army defeated a bigger and more powerful one. The battle led by Cao Gui is one example.
